Art Heals: Foster Kids at DePelchin Children's Center

A note from Depelchin Children's Center to Share Art Heal:

We want to thank you so much for the art kits! We are in full swing providing them to our homes and have gotten great feedback. I wanted to share with you an e-mail that one of our Case Managers wrote after I asked her if she handed it out to one particular home. Here is her response:

I gave it to a lot of kids and they were thrilled! Of note, the “E” kids opened the kits right away and started creating things. “M” was so excited to make a friendship card for her friend Evelyn. “R” on the other hand chose to start on the origami kit. I thought this was a special moment since he had just come back from the psych hospital. He was so happy to get it and was very focused on it. It was a nice moment for us to be together and to see him feel proud of his work. He made an origami dog!

We really appreciate the moments that the kits are creating for us and also the opportunity for it to spark discussions with them about art, healing and connection. I hope we can keep finding ways of working together and making an impact.

We've been providing our art kits to DePelchin Children's Center for a year now and thanks to the success of the program and the support of the community we have committed to providing art kits to the foster kids of Depelchin Children's Center throughout 2018. Our first delivery of art kits this year have already been assembled and delivered by volunteers. Thank you!

The program is funded by the Art of Celebration exhibition right now through April 29 at Art for the People. 10% of the sale of the art sold is gifted to Share Art Heal and VSA of Texas. This money provides the supplies we put in our art kits. Then quarterly we have Art Kit Days at Art for the People when volunteers from the community assemble our kits. Thank you Art for the People, the 50 Austin artists of Art of Celebration, the Austinites who buy art during the exhibit and the folks who show up to assemble our art kits. All y'all make the healing described in the note from this foster child case worker possible. We are grateful.

DePelchin believes every child deserves a safe, loving home. Through their foster care program, they partner with couples and individuals throughout the State of Texas who can provide temporary care for children removed from their birth families because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. Many of these children have experienced trauma and desperately need the care and support of a loving foster family. DePelchin believes every child deserves a forever family. Through their CPS adoption program, they support couples and individuals throughout the State of Texas wanting to adopt children who are in the custody of Child Protective Services and need a permanent, loving home. Through their private infant adoption program, they support couples and individuals wanting to adopt an infant. In addition, they work with birth parents throughout the State of Texas considering placing their child with a loving, adoptive family.
